How Much Food Does My Dog Need?

12.14.2011

Through our years in the pet industry, we have come to find many pet owners are confused about how much food they should feed their pets. It is important that pets receive the proper amount of food to stay healthy, growing, and active! Too much or too little food can slow down their metabolism and take longer to digest causing them to be sluggish, tired, or have bowel problems.

So how much should I feed my pet?

Large, inactive or overweight dogs or cats should be fed 2% of their weight twice a day. Small or very active dogs or cats should be fed 3% of their weight twice a day. This amount of food can be determined with a small kitchen scale, observation and common sense. Remember that all pets are individuals and it is our job to determine if they are receiving what they need to thrive, not just survive. Also remember that this is caring for our buddies… it is not an exact science! More or less, the proportions should be 75-80% meat, bones, or organ with 20-25% vegetable, eggs & other.

Throughout this process monitor your pet to see if they are responding properly to the new diet. Just like humans, you sometimes have to alter, adjust, or ease into a new eating routine!
